The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has named Min H. Kao Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) Assistant Professor Katie Schuman to the Information Science and Technology (ISAT) Study Group beginning in July.
The group brings 40 of the brightest scientists and engineers together to identify new areas of development in computer science and information technology and to recommend future possible research directions.
“I am humbled to have been selected for this program, and eager to begin working through it with some of the top minds in computing,” Schuman said. “I look forward to seeing what innovations are made possible by our collaborations.”
Schuman’s expertise comes in neuromorphic computing, neural networks, advanced algorithms, and machine learning. She is one of the co-leaders of the TENNLab Neuromorphic Computing Research Group at UT and holds eight patents related to neuromorphic computing.
President Eisenhower began the program that is now DARPA in 1958 as a response to the launch of Sputnik, with the goal of making sure US technology was at the cutting edge.
The ISAT Study Group was established by DARPA in 1987 to support its technology offices and provide continuing and independent assessment of the state of advanced Information Science technology as it relates to the US Department of Defense.
