Biography

Benjamin S. Riggan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Prior to joining UT Knoxville, he was an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. He previously served as a Research Scientist and Postdoctoral Fellow with the U.S. Army Research Laboratory, where he conducted research in artificial intelligence, computer vision, image and signal processing, and advanced sensing technologies.

Riggan’s research focuses on domain adaptive artificial intelligence, with an emphasis on principled advancements at the intersection of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and optical physics. His group develops robust and adaptive AI systems that advance computer vision, image and signal processing, and biometrics for complex and changing environments. These efforts support impactful applications spanning national security and public safety, including defense, intelligence, law enforcement, privacy, and precision agriculture.

At the University of Tennessee, Riggan continues to advance fundamental research in intelligent sensing and perception while contributing to workforce development through education and mentorship of the next generation of engineers and scientists.
