Research Highlights

Associate Professor Himanshu Thapliyal and graduate student Tyler Cultice’s work to identify security vulnerabilities was featured in IEEE’s Consumer Electronics Magazine.

A new feature article published in IEEE Power Electronics Magazine by Associate Professor Hua “Kevin” Bai, Associate Professor Daniel Costinett, and Chancellor’s Professor Leon Tolbert, projects the future trends of EV chargers based on past and present related projects at the University of Tennessee.

Min H. Kao Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Professor Husheng Li, an expert in wireless technology, stands to play a key role in the continued development of 5G technology and the provisioning of 6G networks, related breakthroughs and uses, and future communications networks thanks to a trio of grants he received from the National Science Foundation.

A project led by Dongarra Professor Michela Taufer reaches across disciplines to design and build a software system based on data that can predict soil moisture at levels necessary to help support agriculture and hydrology.

Longtime UT and ORNL Professor Jack Dongarra was named the AM Turing Award winner for 2021 for his contributions to computing.

A team of students from the Tickle College of Engineering has taken on a project proposed by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and coached by EECS principal investigator Fred Martin. These students set out to develop a thermal visioning system that required less maintenance and cost less to implement, yet was reliable and refined enough to safely serve specific roles that had little-to-no margin for error.

EECS Dongarra Professor Michela Taufer is part of a national team of researchers working to build the critical technology needed to sew-up the national computational infrastructure. They have just been awarded $5.6M from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for their efforts.

A team led by Professor Ahmedullah Aziz, his research group (NorDIC Lab) and his collaborator at Princeton University have proposed a novel cryogenic memory design for quantum computing.

Dongarra Professor Michela Taufer and EECS Computer Science graduate student Nigel Tan have co-authored a paper on improvements to computer memory that enable more complex computer simulations of plasma, and for their efforts they have been awarded a Best Track Paper Award at the 2021 International Conference on Computational Science.

UT and AT&T are collaborating on new research surrounding 5G technology, with faculty in the Tickle College of Engineering playing key roles.
